The tradtional wells and the fountains of Naxos Island

The richness of the island of Naxos in water is obvious from the numerous wells and fountains that appear in the villages and in the countryside. Many of these can be seen inside the yards and gardens of houses or in the orchards. They can also be found in places of social importance, such as the central square of the village or attached to predominant buildings such as churches.

In this case study some interesting mechanisms developed by the locals in order to draw water from the wells are presented, for interested readers and potential visitors to the island.

Also the case study sheds light to some fountains that can be found in the capital and throughout the villages of Naxos.
